The role, in context
Aftermath is the second of the two paid expansions announced for the year after launch, and it is announced almost entirely as an intention. It is said to deepen the campaign further and to introduce an entirely new faction — and then to stop there, because the publisher states outright that the identity of that faction is being kept back. That refusal is itself a published fact, and it is recorded above as one. Beyond it, the announcement gives the expansion its position as the later of the two, and confirms that it is sold separately as well as included in the Commander Edition.
What is documented over time
Everything known about Aftermath comes from one article: the one that set out the release plans and the content planned for the following year. It places the expansion after the Blood Ravens Story Prologue, states its two effects on the game, and declines to name the faction. Nothing published since has added to it — no window, no name, no unit, no mission. The article does note that the series has a long record of adding factions after launch, which is context for the decision rather than a clue inside it. There is no revision history here, only one announcement that has not moved.
How it is presented in play
The practical value of a page like this is knowing what is and is not on the table. A new faction is confirmed, and that part is not speculation; which faction it is has been withheld on purpose, so no amount of reading around the announcement will produce it. For a reader weighing the Commander Edition, Aftermath is the second of the two paid items bundled into it, and it is also announced as buyable on its own, which makes the edition a convenience rather than the only route. Everything else about the expansion, including when it arrives, remains unpublished.
What you can — and cannot — conclude
This is among the easiest pages on the site to get wrong, because a withheld faction invites a guess and a guess reads exactly like a fact. The setting supplies a long list of plausible candidates, the series supplies a precedent for adding them after launch, and neither supplies an answer. The publisher’s own wording is that the surprise is being kept back for now, which is a statement about the announcement rather than a hint buried inside it. Naming a faction here — even hedged, even as a likelihood — would put an invention on a page whose entire subject is that the answer has not been given.
